Public reporting: A critical component of safety improvement

August 2017

On 25 August, BHI hosted a special seminar with Dr Stephen Duckett on patient safety.

Dr Duckett, an internationally-renowned health economist and Health Program Director at the Grattan Institute, presented a case for the public reporting of hospital performance data as an essential tool for safety improvement.

NSW Chief Health Officer and Deputy Director of Population and Public Health at the NSW Ministry of Health, Dr Kerry Chant, responded to the keynote address by reflecting on the type and quality of data required to effect change and some of the practical challenges of reporting.

The seminar was closed by BHI Acting Chief Executive Dr Kim Sutherland, who acknowledged the challenges of measuring safety and emphasised the importance of listening to patients.
