New Chief Executive for Bureau of Health Information

Health Minister Jillian Skinner today welcomed the appointment of Dr Jean-Frederic Levesque as the new Chief Executive of the Bureau of Health Information.

Mrs Skinner said Dr Levesque is an international expert in measuring health system performance measurement and evaluating primary health care.

“Dr Levesque brings to the Bureau extensive knowledge and leadership skill that will take public reporting on the performance of hospitals and local health systems forward in NSW,” Mrs Skinner said.

Board Chair Bureau of Health Information Professor Bruce Armstrong congratulated Dr Levesque on his appointment.

“His experience in senior public reporting positions makes him well placed to continue the Bureau’s important remit of providing high quality, transparent information to the public, health professionals and the NSW Government to support decision making in the health care sector,” Professor Armstrong said.

Dr Levesque is a medical doctor with a PhD in public health and the organisation of care. He is currently Scientific Director, Analyses and Evaluation of Health Systems, in Quebec’s Institute of Public Health and was formerly Deputy Commissioner, Performance Appraisal and Analysis, in Quebec’s Health and Welfare Commission. Dr Levesque recently spent time in Australia as a visiting academic at the University of Melbourne to conduct an evaluation for the North and West Metropolitan Region of the Victorian Department of Health.

"It is with great excitement that I have accepted the position to lead the Bureau of Health Information. The Bureau has forged a great reputation as a credible and impartial source of information," Dr Levesque said “I look forward to working with a team of capable and creative individuals to further the development of the Bureau, and support the improvement of the NSW health system.”

Mrs Skinner joined Professor Armstrong in thanking Kim Browne, the Bureau’s Acting Chief Executive, who has led the Bureau since February 2012 and will continue to do so until Dr Levesque commences work in Sydney.

“Kim has led the production of six reports and the transfer of management of the NSW Patient Survey Program from the Ministry of Health to the Bureau. I am pleased Kimwill continue to serve the Bureau as Deputy Chief Executive,” Professor Armstrong said.
