Welcome to the new BHI website. During its staged implementation, earlier reports not available on this site can be accessed on the old website.

How we work

BHI runs a broad program of stakeholder engagement, allowing us to build strong relationships that help ensure we are able to identify areas of priority for the healthcare system and deliver reporting in areas that matter most to patients. We implement high standards of data collection, management and governance to consistently provide objective, accurate and robust healthcare performance information. This includes aligning with cyber and privacy requirements to protect the security of patient information (see our Privacy Statement).

BHI employs advanced reporting, communications and data visualisation approaches to deliver reports and associated information products that are accessible to our audiences. This includes a range of innovative report formats including digital platforms such as our website and Data Portal.

Our work plans

BHI’s work is guided by our Strategic Plan 2023–2026 which is our roadmap for enhancing the value of the information and analysis we provide to the community. We also work on an annual basis with the NSW Ministry of Health to ensure our work is aligned with health system priorities, including those outlined in NSW Health’s Future Health: Strategic Framework and Elevating the Human Experience – Our guide to action for patient, family, carer and caregiver experiences. This annual work program is outlined in BHI’s Performance Agreement with NSW Health.

Our reports

BHI provides regular reports on activity and timeliness for public hospital and ambulance services, as well as reporting on key measures of high-quality care, with a particular focus on patient experience. BHI publishes additional in-depth reports on high-priority topics and an annual report to the Minister(s) and Parliament on the performance of the public healthcare system.

Trend, benchmark and other comparative activity and performance information is provided about NSW, local health districts and hospitals, as well as in relation to high-priority services and population groups. This information is made accessible in reports, data tables and via our Data Portal.

Our surveys

BHI gives patients a voice through the NSW Patient Survey Program – the largest statewide patient survey program in Australia and NSW Health’s principal source of robust and representative information about patients’ experiences of healthcare.

Results from this program complement other sources of patient feedback by providing fair and reliable trends and benchmarks for the purposes of performance management, program evaluation and service improvement.
